PastorPreneur Leadership Practices
|
Effective leaders know who they are, what they are supposed to do, and where they are going. Pastorpreneurs are always looking for innovative ways to become more effective in their leadership assignments. Let me suggest a simple definition of leadership effectiveness: LEADERS MOBILIZE AND GALVANIZE PEOPLE TO ACCOMPLISH WORTHY GOALS.
So how does a leader go about becoming effective? Pastorpreneurs understand their roles. Here are four specific roles and descriptions of how effective leaders operate in these roles:
Visionary: Pastorpreneurs help people to see a preferred future and communicate that future in compelling terms. The effective leader not only sees the future, but understands something of the road to get there.
Motivator: Pastorpreneurs are able to motivate people to buy-in to the vision of the future and commit themselves and their resources to accomplish the goals of the organization
Producer: Pastorpreneurs make sure the right things get noticed. Pastorpreneurs decide who will be "heroes" in the organization by the stories they tell and the way they make specific progress towards the goals.
Analyzer: Pastorpreneurs make sure the right things get counted. Deciding what will be measured often determines what people pay attention to! In church life, we typically do the A-B-C's: Attendance, Buildings, Cash ... but pastorpreneurs make sure that in addition to those things (because they are indicators), changed lives are the focus. Only when the focus is changed lives does the organization begin to align its resources, activities, and heartbeat.
Dale Galloway, former pastor of New Hope Community Church in Portland, Oregon, says there are 15 things effective leaders must do:
|
|
|
Make Decisions
Take Responsibility
Get up for the Game
Lead with Enthusiasm
Match People to Mission
Keep Others Focused
Do What is Right
Set the Sail
|
Solve Problems
Have a Sense of Timing
Respond to a Challenge
Delegate/Hold Responsible
Focus
Use Momentum

Do you know who you are as a leader? Do you know what you are supposed to be doing? Most importantly, do you know where you are going? You'll be a more effective leader if you can answer those 3 questions with confidence!
